Dihydroxybenzophenone oximes are prepared by reacting a dihydroxybenzophenone with an acid adduct of hydroxylamine in the presence of a base and an inert solvent or reaction medium and dihydroxybenzanilides are prepared by the thermal rearrangement of dihydroxybenzophenone oximes. The rearrangement reaction can optionally employ acid catalysts for conversion of the oximes at lower temperatures.
