Method and apparatus for automatically linking pieces of knitted fabric, involves piercing knitted loops by needles of two loop selecting and piercing units to which the pieces are guided, the needles of one unit transferring pierced loops onto needles of the other unit to overlie loops alreadly on its needles, pref for chain stitching. Specifically a loop sensor and a arithmetical unit cooperate to control the apparatus, the sensor pref. being a CCD camera and the arithmetical unit being a picture processor.
