A receiving section (2) of the apparatus receives a signal representing a selective call number together with a message signal. A signal processor operates with a call number setting circuit (5) and a waveform shaper (3) for comparing a received selective call number with a preset selective call number. When the comparison is true an alert signal and message signal are output. When the comparison is not true an error detector signasl to the display data processor (10). Consequently, the characters which are determined to be in error are displayed with the opposite contrast to those which are determined to be error-free.
