The use is new of a protein-polysaccharide (I), produced by hot-water or aq. alkaline soln. extraction of the mycelium or fruiting body obtd. from a culture of a basidiomycete of genus Corioulus, which contains 18-38 wt.% protein and which has a mol. wt. of not less than 5000 (by ultracentrifugal analysis), in prepn. of a medicament for use as an antiretroviral agent. (I) a reverse transcritase inhibitor and inhibits binding of HIV to human lymphocytes, and is eps. useful in treatment of HIV infection, including AIDS.
