The handwritten letter recognition system comprises a memory circuit (4) for storing coordinates of stroke on a tablet, a characteristic patern memory circuit (7) stored with standard characteristic pattern, a characteristic point extraction circuit (5a) to decide the number of the charateristic point and extract the position coordinates of the characteristic point, and an identification circuit (5c) to identify the written letter by comparing the position coordinates of the characteristic point with that of the standard characteristic pattern.
