A process for treating an article made of silicon nitride by sweeping the surface of this article with a laser beam, characterised in that the surface microstructure of the said article 10, initially consisting of a mixture of alpha -silicon nitride and beta -silicon nitride, is converted to a surface microstructure consisting essentially of beta -silicon nitride, by applying to the said surface a laser power 6 of between 4 kwatts/cm<2> and 14 kwatts/cm<2> for a time of between 40 milliseconds and 300 milliseconds, so as to introduce onto the article an energy of between 300 joules/cm<2> and 2000 joules/cm<2>. <IMAGE>
