For the monitoring and documentation of the construction of vehicle tyres, a method is provided in which a tyre segment (17) is separated out from the vehicle tyre and at least one cross-sectional surface (31) of the segment (17) is ground over, the method distinguishing itself in that the tyre segment (17) is fixed on a rotatable support (15) in a contour corresponding essentially to the tyre cross-section and the tyre segment (17) is guided past a driven grinding wheel (3), the surface (31) to be ground being aligned essentially parallel to the axis of rotation (11) of the grinding wheel (3). Furthermore, a device is provided for carrying out the method which enables particularly uniform grinding images of qualitatively high value to be generated, so that constructional faults of the tyre can be made distinctly visible by means of the method and the device. <IMAGE>
