A delayed coking process comprises heating a pumpable coker feed and recycle material to coking temp. in a furnace and passing the mixt. to a coking drum where delayed coke is formed and overhead vapours are recovered. The process comprises using a recycle stream contg. a distillate (I) with a boiling range at least partly lower than that of a conventional heavy recycle stream. The coker feed may be passed directly, or via a heated or insulated storage tank, from the crude oil distn. unit in which it is produced to the coking drum.
