A process for the dehydrogenation of alkylaromatic hydrocarbon (I) comprises (a) continuously contacting a reactant vapour stream contg. (I) and steam with dehydrogenation catalyst in the reactor to form a vapour phase dehydrogenation effluent (II), (b) removing (II) as a stream from the reactor, (c) mixig (I) and water in liquid form to form an azeotropic feed mixt. (III), (d) cooling (II) by the indirect heat exchange with a selected fluid cooling medium, (e) recovering additional heat from (II) by the heat exchange with (III) to cause the vapourization of (I) and water, and (f) feeding the vapourized (I) and water to the reactor as the reactant vapour stream.
