The axial-linear guidance of a reciprocating piston rod (21) in a driving mechanism is achieved by the eccentric mounting of a shaft (1) with complete balancing of the oscillating and rotating masses and controlled by a simple epicyclic gear mechanism (11). The change of working fluid is effected by the constant rotation of a rotary slide/rotary sleeve combination (4) which periodically opens inlet and outlet openings (3) in the cylinder wall and cylinder head. Large opening cross-sections and short fluid paths ensure optimum filling, complemented by axial and radial stratification, swirling and exhaust gas recirculation in the case of internal combustion engines. A multiplicity of drive systems ensure low-loss driving (5) of the fluid control system and simple control of the timing angles. Various different pistons (2) with a large connecting-rod ratio starting from 1:2, integral piston-head cooling and minimum piston and connecting rod mass provide compact driving mechanisms for very high speeds of rotation and variable compression. Further characteristic features are: sufficient space for multiple ignition, a pressure-stable cylinder head, a minimum of components for plug-in assembly, very high pressure compression for self-ignition, internal or external combustion, precision compensation of position deviations and modular construction with five basic units. <IMAGE>
