In a dishwasher, in a program-controlled washing cycle a working liquid is heated in a working container 2 and brought into heat exchange with fresh water stored in a storage container 22. In order to be able to perform an optimal heat exchange in a simple and inexpensive manner, not impairing this washing cycle with heated working liquid, the heated working liquid is brought into heat exchange with the fresh water only on completion of this washing cycle. For this purpose, a direction-changing device 12 is used to connect, instead of spray devices 3, a conduit 26 to a circulating pump 10, the conduit 26 passing through the storage container 22. <IMAGE>
