Process in which, when braking, air is drawn in via the inlet valve on the first and third stroke and compressed on the second and fourth stroke and expelled through the partially opened outlet valve towards a throttle valve in the exhaust pipe. In order to increase the final compression pressure, i.e. to make the work to be performed for the compression greater, it is proposed that the outlet valve should in each case open briefly at the start and end of the compression stroke.
