Appts. for electrical elution of electrically-charged substances (I) bound to a sepn. gel comprises at least one electrode chamber for each of a cathode and an anode, these chambers being joined (as the only electrical connection between them) by a receiving container for the gel and, attached to it, a collecting container which contains a sorbent to which eluted (I) bind. The sorbent is an ion-exchanger (particularly a DEAE material) or a reverse-phase material. The two containers are sepd. from each other and/or from the electrode chambers by a filter and/or frit. USE/ADVANTAGE - This appts. provides high recovery of (I) such as RNA, DNA, proteins and polypeptides. It is simple enough to be disposable (preventing cross-contamination and facilitating use with radioactive samples) and is suitable for large-scale operations.
