PURPOSE:To easily detect the insert direction of an endoscope by extracting the shape of the pleats present in the inner wall of a region to be observed from an endoscopic image and judging the insert direction of an endoscope on the basis of said shape of the pleats. CONSTITUTION:When the insert part 2 of an endoscope 1 is inserted in the upwardly bent part of the colon, pleats are present so as to be inclined upwardly. Therefore, the leading end part 11 of the endoscope 1 is curved upwardly and the insert part 2 may be inserted upwardly. When the insert part 2 of the endoscope 1 is inserted in the straight part of the colon 20, the pleats are present without being inclined up and down or left and right. In this case, the insert part 2 of the endoscope 1 may be inserted straightly as it is. An endoscopic apparatus is equipped with a fiberscope 1 to which illumination light is supplied by a light source apparatus 6 and an externally fitted television camera 30 and the image signal outputted from a signal processor 31 is inputted to a monitor 32 and the insert direction of the endoscope is detected by an electronic computer.
