In a process for melting metal by means of an a.c. arc burning between an electrode and the metal to be melted, a load factor cos gamma from 0.93 to 0.79 and later a factor from 0.78 to 0.62 is maintained up to the start of the melting process (17 UHP') in order to avoid an in most cases locally limited, but intensive wear of the lining of the vessel receiving the metal.
