PURPOSE:To facilitate the production of a fine and integrated element, by protruding a portion of an optical waveguide where an active layer is contacted therewith in a stepped manner with respect to the other portions, such that the film pressure changes in a face standing vertically to the interface with the active layer. CONSTITUTION:Glass is RF spattered on a molten quartz substrate 4 to form a waveguide 3. A mask 10 is then coated thereon and the glass is further spattered to form a stepped projection 2. Subsequently, an active medium 1 consisting of a polyurethane film containing rhodamine 6G is formed on the stepped projection 2. Pumping light is focused linearly along the dot-and-dash line in the drawing by means of a cylindrical lens, whereby the active medium is excited to radiate laser beams. The radiated beams are combined and guided in the waveguide projection 2, and resonated and amplified between the end faces 2A and 2B of the projection 2. The laser beams are then taken out by the waveguide 3. With the stepped projection as described above, the laser beams are not diffused but present a spot form, and have a fine periodic structure in both of the X and Y directions. |
