Filtration device for stepwise filtration and sorting of solid components from a suspension consists of several modular, cylindrical elements, stacked vertically one into the other. Each of the elements is provided with a piece of filter cloth. Pref. the elements are made of a heat-and pressure-resistant synthetic polymer such as polyamide, polyoxymethylene or pref. PTFE. The filter cloth is a gauze of natural or synthetic fibres of mesh size 1-500 microns, pref. of polyamide, polypropylene or polyester, e.g. poly(ethylene terephthalate). USE/ADVANTAGE - The device is used to sort cell components (e.g. protoplasts, nuclei, mitochondria or chloroplasts) from an aq. suspension prepd. by disintegration of tissue or individual cells. The filter cloths do not require supports (which can cause blockages) and the elements do not have to be specially shaped. The assembled device can be sterilised by auto cleaving.
