A wideband optical transmission system (11) for the subscriber region is provided with a bidirectionally operable optical waveguide (12) in which, in a wavelength range which is significantly lower than its limit wavelength, only the basic mode LP01 and the next highest mode LP11 can be propagated, and further with two optical transmitters (16, 18) and with two receivers (17, 19) whose operating wavelength lies within the above-mentioned wavelength range in which the optical waveguide (12) is to be operated, where the optical transmitters (16, 18) and the optical receivers (17, 19) are coupled to the optical waveguide so that two optical signals are transmitted bidirectionally with different modes LP01, LP11. In order to achieve a simpler, lower- cost design in a wideband optical transmission system (11) of this type, it is envisaged that one optical transmitter (16) couples signals in the LP01 mode into the optical waveguide (12) and the signals of this LP01 mode are decoupled through radiation to one optical receiver (19) and that the other optical transmitter (18) and the other optical receiver (17) in each case face a coupling or decoupling device (23, 22) disposed in the path of the waveguide (12) carrying signals in the LP01 mode, which device serves to couple signals in the LP11 mode from the other optical transmitter (18) into the optical waveguide (12) or decouple them from the optical waveguide (12) to the other optical receiver (17).
