PURPOSE:To obtain high nonlinearity and to improve moldability by using the solid soln. which is formed by uniformly dispersing a ferroelectric high- polymer liquid crystal and a nonlinear optical compd. and has excellent mechanical strength and processability. CONSTITUTION:A guest org. compd. which is the nonlinear optical compd. having nonlinear optical characteristics is easily and uniformly compatible in the host high-polymer liquid crystal compd. to form the solid soln. having the excellent mechanical strength and processability. A side chain type high- polymer liquid crystal and a main chain type high-polymer liquid crystal, etc., are usable as the ferroelectric high-polymer liquid crystal used in this case. Since the ferroelectric high-polymer liquid crystal is a high polymer, the nonlinear optical material obtd. in such a manner has the high stability in terms of maintenance of the oriented state and the easy disturbance of the orientation by shock, etc., is obviated. The nonlinear optical element formed by subjecting such nonlinear optical material to an orientation treatment is easy to form and has a high memory characteristic and switching characteristic. |
