An embossing calander (100) comprises an embossing cylinder (4) in the form of a conventionally cooled cylinder and an adjacent counterpressure cylinder (5) arranged at the same height as the latter, in the form of a cylinder hydraulically supported from the interior and provided with an elastic coating (10). The web (1) travels vertically downward through the embossing nip (3) between the cylinders (4, 5). A conventional cambered cooling cylinder (11) is arranged below the counterpressure cylinder (5).
