The thin tubes or rods are randomly situated, and frequently interlock with one another, in a shallow trough (12). As soon as a hydraulic lifting device (13) is raised, which lifting device (13) is mounted beneath the trough, within the outline and in the end region of the latter, a single tube (2) is taken hold of by the said lifting device in the region of the tube end, is raised to an operating level and is held fast by a clamping device. This tube is pulled out of the stack over its entire length owing to the fact that arms (22) of a conveying chain (20) which circulates at operating level engage beneath the raised part of the tube, move it onwards over the entire length of the trough and in so doing pull out the said tube. A tilting movement of the arms causes this separated tube to be delivered sideways.
