Gas evolution from refuse dumps is reduced by injection of a dilute aq. slurry of a mixt. of components (a), (b) and (c) in a (a):(b)+(c) wt. ratio of 60-8:40-92, the amt. of component (b) being at least 5wt.%. The components are: (a) an at least latent hydraulic silicate component; (b) an alkali and/or alkaline earth metal component based on CaO, Ca(OH)2, MgO, Mg(OH)2 as activator for (a); and (c) anhydrous or hydrated calcium sulphite and/or sulphate. ADVANTAGE - The process reduces gas evolution, makes toxic components innocuous and produces rapid consolidation of the dump for reuse, e.g., for building.
