In a small-animal cage, suitable for receiving hamsters, white mice, guinea pigs and similar small animals, a box-shaped shell made of plastic is covered by a plane wire grating (17). The interior is delimited by a higher longitudinal wall (11) and a lower longitudinal wall (12), so that the wire grating has an inclined position. The wire grating is guided in lateral grooves (16) and can be pulled out as far as required over the wall (11) and locked in the pulled-out position. In the region of the wall (12), there is thus an opening which is as large as required and where the animal keeper can reach in in as flat a manner as possible so that a door is not necessary. <IMAGE>
