A lock for the door of a motor vehicle has the mechanism mounted on an angle formed support plate. The mechanism consists of an internal release valve (3), an external release lever and a child safety lock lever (7). The internal release lever and the external release lever are connected to a common actuating lever (11) which in turn actuates the locking pawl. The child safety lock lever remains in the locking position when the door is in the otherwise unlocked position but an additional device is provided, which when actuated in these circumstances, moves the actuating lever to release the child safety lock lever.
