A prepn. of epichlorohydrin comprises synthesis of 2,3dichloro-1- propanol from allyl alcohol and chlorine in 45-70 wt.% hydrogen chloride soln., at -30-20≦̸C and 1-11 atms.; recovering HCl from reaction mixt.; recycling HCl; cooling the liq. mixt. to 40≦̸C or less to effect phase sepn.; reacting the oil phase with an aq. alkali soln. or suspension at 40-110≦̸C in the presence of an inert solvent to obtain epichlorohydrin. The epichlorohydrin is obtd. with high selectivity and is useful as solvent, for the prepn. of epoxy resins and synthetic rubber.
