A monitoring probe to be attached to the scalp of a fetus is realised by the combination of a rigid, elongated applicator tool (10;200) and an elongated integral drive rod (14;202). The drive rod (202) is a flexible cable (244,246,248) which includes a monitoring probe (12;204) with an extending spiral needle (22;206) at the front end thereof. At the rear end of the cable is a drive knob (236). The applicator tool (10;200) includes a longitudinal slot (208) which permits insertion and removal of the drive rod. When the drive rod is positioned within the applicator tool, a hood element (16;212) overlies the probe (12;204) and the needle (22;206).
