The ribbon (17) runs from a feed spool (81), via an external run between the type element (25) and the platen of a typewriter, back into the cartridge to a take-up spool (91). The spools (81, 91) are supported between a bottom portion (19) and a cover. The feed spool has a flange (86) co-operating with a spring-type positioning means (88) preventing the ribbon unwinding slightly. The take-up spool (91) has no flange but has teeth (94) at one axial end co-operating with a tongue (96, 97) on the bottom portion (19), so as to prevent unwinding of the ribbon wound on to the take-up spool (91).
