<p>A method and device for detecting defects (5, 19) in wire or cable (3) insulation (6) without disconnecting the cable (3) by synchronously detecting the current in a sense conductor (4, 11, 12, 13) with respect to the potential waveform existing or imposed on the cable (3) under test. Both the ion source (1, 10) and the sense conductor (4, 11, 12, 13) are placed in close proximity to the cable (3) under test. The current flowing in the sense conductor (4, 11, 12, 13) due to the ions (2) from the ion source (1, 10) varies depending upon the presence of defects (5, 19) in the cable (3) insulation and the potential waveform present on the cable under test. The synchronous detection enhances the signal to noise ratio of the current measurement.</p> |
