PURPOSE:To improve the probability of focusing on a subject that a photographer intends by grouping focus detection results of focus detection areas, selecting the group which is considered to match the intention of the photographer most, and obtaining a final focus detection result from the group by statistical averaging. CONSTITUTION:A focus detecting means 2 performs focus detection arithmetic for data of image sensors corresponding to focus detection areas AREA (j) (j=1-f) to find the defocusing quantities of the focus detection areas and a grouping means 3 classifies focus detection areas where the same subject is considered to be acquired in several groups. An optimum group selecting means 4 selects the best group where a subject which is a subject that the photographer intends with high possibility is acquired. An optimum defocusing quantity arithmetic means 5 calculates the best defocusing quantity of the whole system from the defocusing quantities of the focus detection areas in the best group. Consequently, the probability of focusing on the specific subject that the photographer intends can be increased. |
