The mixtures of phenols, phenols and bases or bases obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of coal are separated into their constituents with the aid of petroleum ether with the employment of low temperatures. In examples (1) crude phenol isolated from a petrol produced by the destructive hydrogenation of coal is freed from colouring matter and associated phenolic impurities; (2) a phenolic fraction containing cresol, xylenols and higher boiling phenols derived from the destructive hydrogenation of coal is treated to separate the cresol; (3) a mixture of phenol and o-cresol derived from the destructive hydrogenation of coal is separated; (4) and (5) a mixture of iso-quinoline and quinoline derived from the destructive hydrogenation of coal is separated.
