A process for production of an alkylthiobenzoate comprising reacting a cyclohexenone having the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is C1-C6 alkyl; X is alkyl or unsubstituted alkyl; and Y is hydrogen, halogen or alkyl, with a mercaptan having the formula R2SH in which R2 is C1-C4 alkyl, preferably in the presence of an acid catalyst, to form a cyclohexadiene thioether, and dehydrogenating the thioether to produce a thioalkylbenzoate. The thioalkylbenzoate may be further converted by oxidation and/or hydrolysis to a corresponding thioalkyl, alkylsulfinyl or alkylsulfonyl benzoic acid. |
