PURPOSE: To reduce sound by supplying compressed refrigerant to a muffler and diverting and discharging a portion of the compressed refrigerant into the upper level of the oil in an oil sump when the pressure in the muffler is high. CONSTITUTION: Compressed refrigerant from a compressor is delivered to a muffler chamber 13 of a muffler 10 through heads 17, 19. Most of the compressed refrigerant flows through an exhaust pipe 18 to a condensation chamber of a cooling device. A portion of the compressed refrigerant is delivered through an orifice 30. When the pressure in the muffler 10 at that time is a high pressure of at least 100 pound/inch<2> as compared with the pressure in the lower portion of the compressor, a portion of the supplied compressed refrigerant is diverted. The compressed refrigerant flows into the upper level of the oil in an oil sump 90 through an orifice. The compressed refrigerant flown into the oil sump 90 is driven out to the upper level of the oil without disturbing the lower level of the oil. Refrigerant in oil in the upper level of the oil sump 90 is super-saturated. The refrigerant is not solved in the oil, thereby froth is created, which reduces the noise.
