PURPOSE:To obtain the fiber for optical transmission with which the maintenance of strength and heat resistance are compatible and which is practically usable by forming polyorganosiloxane compsns. which are different in the content of ladder type structures into multiple layers and coating the fiber with these layers at the varied compsn. ratios of the ladder parts and straight chain parts thereof. CONSTITUTION:The coating layer for protecting the glass fiber 1 consists of the resin compsn. essentially consisting of the polyorganosiloxane having the ladder parts and the straight chain parts in combination. The glass fiber is coated with the five layers from the 1st layer 21 up to the 5th layer 25. The respective coating layers 21 to 25 consist of the polyorganosiloxane compsns. which are different in the ratios of the ladder parts and the straight chain parts. The ratios of the ladder layers in the polyorganosiloxane are successively lower from the 1st layer 21 nearest the glass fiber 1 toward the outer periphery. The sufficient mechanical protective effect and heat resistance are imparted to the glass fiber 1 in this way.
