The process consists of passing an electric current into the mass to be desiccated (dried). The device comprises a cell 1 in which there is placed a sack containing the sludge to be desiccated, the base of the sack being equipped with a non-recoverable (consumable) electrode 3, an electrode being positioned on the sludge and being placed on the cover of the cell, the vapour (steam) produced being drawn off by means of a fan 12 and passing through a droplet separator 13 and a condenser 14. <IMAGE>
