A focal plane shutter for a camera comprising fixed structure 1 having a shutter aperture 1a therein; at least one shutter blade means 6, 9 comprising at least one shutter blade plate 6, 9 which is pivotally supported on one side only thereof by a plurality of arms 2, 3, the arms 2, 3 being pivotally mounted in the fixed structure 1 so that the or each shutter blade plate 6, 9 can be moved relative to the shutter aperture 1a to open and close the latter; and at least one plate-engaging member 13a which is engaged by the opposite side of the respective shutter blade plate or plates 6, 9 so that movement of the latter is braked by the plate-engaging member 13a to cause the respective shutter blade plate 6, 9 to move substantially parallel to itself. <IMAGE>
