Preparatory work on large areas such as on the hull planking of ships turns out to be difficult if the areas to be worked, such as in the bow and stern area of the hull, overhang. In addition, during such preparatory and reconstruction work, large quantities of blasting material and chemicals often accumulate which get into the atmosphere or the water and cause damage to the environment. According to the invention, an elevating work platform is provided with a travelling tower (10, 11) and a working bridge (14) arranged in a vertically movable manner on the travelling tower (10, 11). The travelling tower (10, 11) is movable towards the hull and away from the hull and can be adapted to the headroom under the hull by attaching and dismantling vertical segments. The working bridge (14) can thus always be held close to the hull planking (1) in order to carry out the necessary work on it. A longitudinal conveyor (30) mounted on the working bridge (14) collects the harmful substances falling down during this work and puts them at the lateral end of the working bridge into a bucket which hangs on an electric winch and upon reaching a certain weight is lowered to the ground for emptying into a waiting container. <IMAGE>
