PURPOSE:To reduce the generation of hydrogen gas without using mercury and improve the storage stability of a battery by using a negative active material made of an active metal, an electrolyte made of a caustic alkali aqueous solution, and a quinoline derivative compound as an anticorrosive. CONSTITUTION:The first component of a negative electrode mix is an active metal, preferably zinc or zinc alloy, the second component is an electrolyte, e.g. a caustic potash aqueous solution or a caustic soda aqueous solution. The third component is a quinoline derivative compound as an anticorrosive, and an 8-substituted quinoline derivative such as 8-hydroxyquinoline or 8- mercaptquinoline is preferable. One kind of the quinoline derivative compound is solved and dispersed in the electrolyte, a negative electrode active material is immersed in it, and the surface of the negative electrode active material is film-processed. The elution of the negative electrode active material and the occurrence of hydrogen gas can be suppressed. |
