The invention relates to a sensor (1) made of a polymeric semiconductor material for determining chemical compounds in waste gases and liquids. The sensors (1) used up to now and made of polythiophene, polyparaphenylene, polyphenylacetylene and polyparaphenyleneazomethine have limited suitability for sensitive detection and are completely unsuitable for selective detection. The sensor (1) of the invention is made of a polymeric semiconductor material which in its main chains contains functional groups or in its side branches contains heterocyclic compounds which are suitable for the selective adsorption of molecules. The main chains of the polymer serve as electron conductors and thus at the same time for the transmission of the selected information. <IMAGE>
