A method is provided for detecting a current flowing between a phase conductor and a return conductor via the human body, in which method the output signal provided by a current sensor located in one of the mains conductors is detected. In this case, a low voltage which is not dangerous for the human body is connected to the mains conductors, and, in the event of a measurement value above an upper threshold value, the normal mains operating voltage is switched on. If the low voltage lies below this threshold value it is assumed that there is a human body between the phase conductor and the return conductor. <IMAGE>
