Using a conventional tape measure, one person is frequently unable to measure exactly enough because there is always the need for a second person to hold the start of the measuring tape. In order to remedy this, it is provided that the tape measure has at the start of the measuring tape an adjusting grip (3) on which a spike (13) can be brought into engagement with the object to be measured and that the measuring tape is held thereby. The adjusting grip (3) can, however, also be folded over without the spike (13) at the beginning of an edge to be measured in such a way that the measuring tape guided on the horizontal plane is thereby held. The adjusting grip (3) also permits internal measures to be taken in a simplified way.
