The portable data input terminal (1) is powered by built in rechargable batteries that receive energy from a separate charge unit (60). Energy transfer is via an inductive coupling (62). The terminal has an acoustic coupler (12), an LCD display, a membrane pushbutton panel (11) and a field for input of hand-written characters. Within the unit is a control circuit that receives the keyboard data directly and produces coded output.
