The electron gun has two acceleration and focussing electrodes (18), an angled expansion electrode (20), a top section wall, an electrode (24) and three electron beam apertures (30a-30c). The boundary of the section (23) is formed with an oblong section, such that the depth is greater than the width. The angled expansion electrodes provide an additional control of the three electrode beams. The focussing of the beams is improved by reducing the distance (S) between the three beams. ADVANTAGE - Minimises aberration causes by deflection of electron beams.
