For a belt grinder (1) having a housing (2) which accommodates a motor, having a driving roller (4) and deflection roller (8) which are axially parallel but movable out of the axially parallel arrangement and rotatably mounted and on the circumferences (4', 8') of which an endless abrasive belt (14) is rotatably guided, having a carrying plate (5) which is displaceably arranged inside the housing (2) and can be subjected to the force of a spring (21) supported on the housing (2), having a fork-shaped receptacle (6) for the deflection roller (8) and having a sensor (12) with a run-against part (12'), which scans the position of the abrasive belt (14) on one of its outer edges (13, 13') and acts on the carrying plate (5), it is proposed that the sensor (12) is a substantially rigid part of the carrying plate (5) assigned to an outer edge (13) of the abrasive belt (14) on the driving roller (4). As a result, a simplified construction and accurate, rapid centring of the abrasive belt (14) are achieved. <IMAGE>
