The head includes a slider having a horizontal mediumcontacting surface on one side. A thin film composite is formed on a non- mangetic substrate layer. A main pole film layer has a predetermined width corresp. to the width of tracks to be recorded. A protective film layer covers the main pole film. The composite film is oriented in parallel with the horizontal direction of the recording medium with the protective film layer on a leading end relative to a moving direction of the recording medium. The nonmagnetic substrate is pasted on the winding core so that the pole film is situated above the winding core.
