A linear guide for a slide (1), which supports at least one downward-pointing supporting track (8) with rolling elements (11) rolling between the latter and a supporting rail (2), has at least one surrounding plate (16) with an upward-facing retaining track and rolling elements (19, 20) rolling between this retaining track and the supporting rail (2). Each surrounding plate (16) is supported on at least one elastic supporting contact firmly connected to the slide (1) and on rolling contacts of its retaining track (18) and is connected under prestress to the slide (1) by at least one vertical head screw (23) arranged between its retaining track (18) and its supporting contact(s) (13). To enable the head screw(s) (23) to be preloaded with different forces without tilting the surrounding plate (16), the spring characteristic of the supporting contact(s) (13) of the surrounding plate (16) is matched to the combined spring characteristic of the rolling contacts, with the result that the spring travels of the surrounding plate (16) on its supporting contact(s) and on its rolling contacts when the head screw(s) (23) is/are preloaded are the same.
