A mutant of Microbacterium named 851R, the main characteristics of which are as follows: a Gram- positive bacterium, motionless, with nitrate reduction ability, able to produce H2S, alive in milk heated to 63 DEG C for 30 minutes or to 72 DEG C for 15 minutes. The thallus is of red or orange red colour is described. However, the colour of the thallus is turned to pink at about 38 DEG C and to colourless to 40 DEG C. In particular, the DNA of the strain contains R fragment which is detectable with a special R fragment DNA probe. A process for producing single cell protein nutrient solution comprises cultivating Microbacterium strain 851/R in a soybean medium or starch medium. The medium comprises (in addition to soybeam or starch) yeast, calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, potassium hydrogen phosphate, magnesium sulphate and traces of sodium malybdate, sodium selenite, zinc sulphate and cobalt ( PI ) chloride. |
