PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed product in high purity and yield by using a catalyst consisting of low-alkaline and weakly acidic gammaaluminas having average pore size being within specific ranges, having long life and capable of readily regenerating when isopropanol is dehydrated to provide propylene. CONSTITUTION:When isopropanol is dehydrated to provide propylene, the reac tion is carried out using gamma-alumina having 30-150 A average pore size and 10-40 A standard deviation as a catalyst at 180-400 deg.C. The above-mentionedgamma-aluminas are preferably low-alkaline gamma-alumina having further >=0.4cc/g (as dried alumina) total pore volume and containing >=90wt.% gamma-alumina, <10wt.% silica and <=0.5wt.% alkali metal oxide and weakly acidic-alumina having pka 3.3-6.8 and <=3.5meq/g integrated acid amount. Isopropanol is obtained from acetone which is a by-product in phenol production by cumen method and propylene can be re-used as a raw material for cumen synthesis. |
