Compounds of the formula in which R1 denotes hydrogen or lower alkyl, R2 denotes hydrogen or a hydroxyl protecting group R2', and R3 denotes optionally substituted phenyl or lower alkyl, can be prepared in a three-step process from easily accessible beta -lactam starting materials.
