3-(Benzothiazol-2-ylalkyl)-4-oxo-3H-phthalazine-1-ylacetic acid cpds. of formula (I) are prepd. by reacting cpds. or formula (II) or acid addn. salt, with a 2-amino-thiophenol cpd. or acid addn. salt. In the formulas, R1 is H or C1-4 alkyl; R3 and R4 are each H; R5 and R6 are each H, F or trifluoromethyl; Z is H; U is CH2 or a covalent bond; W is S, CH2 or a covalent bond; Q is CN or -C=NHOR2; R2 is C1-4 alkyl. (I) are effective inhibitors of aldose reductase, and useful for treating diabetic complications.
