<p>PURPOSE:A hexapyranose derivative is oxidized using a chromic acid oxidizing agent such as Jones reagent to give the titled optically active substance used in the synthesis of thienamycin in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R<1> is amino radical, which may be protected; R is H, protecting group or salt-forming cation; wavy lines represent axial, equatorial or their mixture) is oxidized with a chromic acid oxidizing agent such as Jones reagent to give a compound of formula II. The solvent used in the reaction is acetone, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane or water and, preferably the reaction is conducted under ice cooling to room temperature for 30min to 2hr. Novel compounds also are included among the compounds of formula II.</p> |
